More than 50 years ago, the first yoik concert was held, without permission.

Sámi Easter Festival has been a central church holiday for the Sámi people in Kautokeino and an important gathering point for generations. In addition to the church’s role, traditions such as reindeer racing and joik have been significant for many. The use of tamed reindeer as a mode of transport naturally led to reindeer racing competitions. In 1954, Sami Reindeerherders Association of Norway officially organized a reindeer racing competition open to all who wished to participate. Sámi music has always been an essential part of the easter celebration, and this is still reflected in today’s festival. In 1971, a joik concert held in the school gym, establishing joik as an annual tradition at the easter event. In 1990, the first Sami Grand Prix was held

Over the years, the main responsibility for the event has been held by Guovdageainnu Samiid Searvi, Heargevuoddjin Searvi, and several other contributors. Eventually, Kautokeino Municipality and the Sámi National Theater also became part of the organizing team. In more recent times, the festival has developed into its own business entity, and it is now organized by the Sámi Music Festival, with support and cooperation from others, naturally.

A huge thank you goes to all who have actively worked to preserve, convey, and continue Sámi Easter Festival. Thanks to those who have been involved in music, culture, language, and joik. Special thanks to those who have spent time and energy training draft reindeer, hosting confirmations and weddings, and to all who have participated in the many gatherings and celebrations. We must also not forget the volunteers who have worked behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly. We look forward to many more years filled with great experiences, new friendships, and cherished memories created during Sámi Easter Festival in Kautokeino.
